Modern day Tunisia is the fastest developing country in North Africa, with a population close to 10 million, 1 million of whom live in the capital, Tunis. 96% of the population is Muslim and Arabic is the official language. French is widely used and many Tunisians also speak English, Italian or German (sometimes all three).
